Title: Dutch Pattern M1948 Carbine
Post by: Phosphorus32 on December 13, 2016, 08:34:02 PM
Below are a lot of pictures of a short (17.3”, 44cm barrel) large ring FN Mauser carbine of the Dutch M1948 pattern, chambered in 7.92x57mm that I bought off of GunBroker a couple of weeks ago. The receiver ring is bare where the W or J (for Queens Wilhelmina or Juliana) or IOB (as on GM's) are normally found. Nor does it have "Politie", Dutch for police, on the right side of the receiver ring as found on some of the other M1948 carbines without receiver ring crests.

It has FN's earlier style single broach cut pattern receiver (looks like a C instead of an H) and a smooth rather than the later corrugated buttplate. At least two others, with the bare receiver ring and the stock marked “N. Baronian, Alep” as discussed below, and with serial numbers lower than mine have been discussed on GunBoards. Not exactly a common variant but still a mystery.

The unifying feature of these unmarked carbines is that N. Baronian is found on the stock on the left side of the butt and on the bottom of the stock. Baronian is the “European” spelling of a common Armenian last name, Paronyany (or Պարոնյանը, in the Armenian alphabet). Perhaps N. Baronian was a small subcontract stockmaker (seems unlikely for FN), or an aftermarket replacement stockmaker  :-\ The font of the SN on the stock is different from the receiver/barrel, perhaps due to it being added after original manufacture of the carbine.

If N. Baronian was a member or descendant of the early 20th century Armenian diaspora from Turkey, then perhaps Alep is his city of origins or commerce (Alep is the French/Waloon spelling for Aleppo in Syria). The font and location suggests Alep is associated with the name N. Baronian not an abbreviation for an undetermined Dutch or Dutch East Indies organization like the IOB, or similar.

The stock looks like beech or a wood related in grain morphology such that it produces the “fish-scaling” pattern. The inletting for the barrel channel appears hand carved, or adjusted, based on the tooling marks. The exterior of the stock is smooth and doesn’t have hand tool marks.

The “parts markings” are all 8 in a rectangle. It has the expected FN proofs and inspection marks.  I’ve included pictures of the import (and export?) stamps. It has an older style CAI import stamp on the bottom of the muzzle end of the barrel without a country of origin:

CAI St.A. Vt.
M-98 8x57

I suspect the “7.92 Mr.” on the barrel shank is an “export” stamp, rather than an import stamp, since it’s in the European designation for the caliber.

Basically I really can't say anything definitive about this Mauser's usage, except the Dutch are the only ones known to have ordered these carbines in 7.92x57mm. Thanks for looking!

That's absurdly cool, nice find. You're way out of my league with this one, though I have seen one of the Wilhelmina FNs at Show of Shows. Wait...it's import marked??!! Bah! Garbage! Want to sell it?

If it were mine, I'd be taking it straight to Anthony Vanderlinden, he's an author & FN expert. He hangs out over at lugerboards and he's always happy to drop some knowledge.

Wait...wasn't it you who, while talking about FN pistols, texted me a picture of Wilhelmina and told me you were enamored and enchanted by her beauty? Sick.

Nice one Jon!  thumb1  You get a smokin' deal on this one under the radar, or did you have to give a premium because of the unusual feature set?  I really like this Mauser.  thumb1

Thanks, it's a rare little carbine.  Thanks for the tip on Anthony. I may have to sign up for Lugerboards and track him down.

I recall that a bit differently but okay  rofl

Thanks RM!  Well, this one is rare enough that it's hard to assess the market value. I was the only one who bid on it. It was a bit less than IOBs usually go for so I think it was a fair price.  Regardless, I just had to have it  :)
