Why do you own a Mosin?
« on: November 16, 2021, 10:12:18 PM »
Just curious.

Why should I buy one over an Enfield or Mauser?  :-\

I own many of all three.  thumb1  I appreciate the craftsmanship in the Mauser, love the smoothness of an Enfield.. But, I also just love the brute force power approach of the Mosin. The simplicity of the design is just awesome, as it's history.  It has the aura of... I am Russian, I hurt on both ends..  :)

I’ll be the contrarian here. I own zero Mosins (and probably never will). No Enfields either but wouldn’t be opposed to something in .303. Mausers I love but they have gotten quite spendy lately, especially K98’s.

The only way to avoid Mosin #2 is to avoid Mosin #1…

If your going to have just one Mosin... I would suggest the M39.  Ergonomics, good sights, good barrel.  And of course the history in them all.  I have more of these than any other.

Any Finn would be a good shooter.. on ergonomics, my M28/76 is a little better than an M39 to me. But, they are few and far between.

I like them all, with many of each.

I agree with the M/39 comment, they’re my favorite main battle rifle Mosins. Best sights, best overall design, beautiful birch stocks. The M28/76 is a cool post-WWII target rifle that is a great shooter with excellent ergonomics and sights, but not as steeped in history. The M91/30s are the cheapest and have that Russian WWII history allure, even after post-WWII refurbishment (99.9% of them). The short straight bolt handle and cock-on-open design on Mosins generally requires a slap to open technique.

I love the looks of the Mausers the most of the three. The build quality, especially on the peace time South American contract Mausers from Ludwig Loewe, DWM, and Mauser Oberndorf is amazing. Walnut! The bolts operate way more smoothly than the other cock-on-open design (Mosin). With the massive numbers of variations, I have more of these than anything else and I’m nowhere near getting them all.

I really like the peep sights on the No4 Mk1 Lee-Enfields. They are battle rifle sights, not target sights, i.e., large aperture for a good field of view. If you relax, focus on the front sight and let your eye naturally center the post, they’re very accurate. Bolts operate very smoothly once you become accustomed to the cock-on-close mechanics. Great British WWII history and better looking than the No1 MkIII in my subjective opinion. The No4 Mk2 is probably the best of all the LEs (excluding the T), but is post-WWII.

Thanks for the replies!   thankyou1 thankyou1

I look at them from time to time and was curious why you bought one or you like them.  I saw Atlantic had more in and they are already gone.  This is the type of occurrence that makes me thing I need one too!!  :)) :))

Also look at Enfields and Mausers, but as was mentioned Mausers have gone up a lot.  I remember the Mitchel's Mausers ads that had them and thought about buying back then (15-20 yrs ago?) but never did.  ::)

Don't know a lot about any of the three, so I'd need to do some more reading.

I know they are fine rifles, but just never been a big 1903 Springfield fan.

Wow, that didn't take long for AF to sell them.

Anyway, on the original topic, I have to say I'm really attached to my Mosins. Maybe even more so than to my SKS's  :-[ Yes, they are never going to be as refined as Mausers, K-31's, etc. but many of them have quite a story to tell. Rugged war time machines they are, and you can definitely rely on them no matter what. Development of Mosins also spans a long period of time and covers main advances in firearm development. From the collectors point of view there are quite a few variations that are interesting in their own right.

M39 are nice and definitely shoot great, but I actually prefer the original M91 design with a lock ring bayonet. Just for aesthetics, I suppose.

My answer would be amazement that by putting a crude locking mechanism on a length of sewer pipe then mounting it on a length of 2x6 could result in such a long lived combat weapon chuckles1 wink1.

Seriously, I never thought I'd own one, let alone eight.  Part of it is the investment angle.  The other is I figure that they will be the last ones that are taken if push comes to shove.  Just look at 'em.  Really!?  rofl2
