Chinese “Jungle Carbine”
« on: March 04, 2024, 10:06:48 PM »
I recently picked up this rifle from the latest batch of Chinese “jungle carbines” imported into Canada. The rifle has some interesting features that I’d like to mention.

Rifle assembled

Rifle disassembled

Standard stamped trigger group

Magazine with an odd divot I’ve never seen before (and perhaps one of the worst mag pins I’ve seen yet)

FRP upper handguard

Very thin one the one side and bends easily

A unique piston head I haven’t seen before

Bolt and bolt carrier

Assorted photos of the stock compared to a 1969 /26\ stock. Noticeably thinner in multiple areas and unique metal components. Buttplate looks reminiscent of a laminate Russian stock (I don’t have one to compare to at the moment), and the sling swivel is noticeably different.

Despite having a pinned barrel the stock is of the threaded barrel pattern, necessitating a cut in the receiver.

Receiver markings and arsenal mark.

Is the receiver cast?

Nice pick up and great photo spread!  thumb1

That gas piston style is new to me  :o

The milled notch on the front lower edge of the receiver is standard for receivers accepting a pressed and pinned barrel.

Pretty neat carbine.  The phenolic stock looks like a much different version than the two or three types we typically see with the rear sling swivel cast in place during curing of the stock.   thumb1

/606\ is a pretty uncommon arsenal.  I only have a few examples: a year 11, a year 14, and two year 16s.  Looks like year 18's exist too, nice!  thumb1

Very nice.  These stocks look much better when viewed with the naked eye though.

Honestly even in person it’s kinda ugly. Don’t get me wrong I’m happy with it. But the seams and fitment is less than ideal.

I've got several phenolic stocks and a half dozen HGs. Out of that bunch I could only find 1 HG that "sorta" matched the "nicest" stock. The blade unit was the worst of the heap, very cruddy.
Scrubbed of numbers, black naval sling, black Alby bayo, blued bolt carrier. Turned out OK. The last of my scrubbed parts builds and the only other complete mix-master rifle ended up chopped to 18.5" in a Shernic. PAX
