Mossberg 42M(b)
« on: July 05, 2018, 02:29:43 PM »
Another one.. :)  damn addicting things..  Well, this is one that kind of like the M44 Mossberg, and this model usually takes the backseat to it, but this was the only other Mossberg used as trainers in both the US and Britain. This is a commercial postwar variant, made between 1945 and 1947, the trainers were made from 1939 to 1945. The biggest difference in the trainer version and this variant was generally the sights and the stocks on the trainers didn't have the cheek rest on the left side. Also like the M44 these have the same trigger adjustment and the two are close enough, they even share magazines. Some other slight differences can be noted between the commercial and trainer like the stock wood, the trainers have lower quality beech vs. walnut for the commercial, some in the series had plastic butt plates, some like this had a totally different steel butt plate. So while it is commercial and lacks the glitz and glamour....in it's heart, it's still a trainer.. As I have discovered, Mossberg was known to deviate slightly in a production run or even use up parts found from before.

It has both the original typical sport style rear sight and still maintains the Mossberg target sight as well... The front hooded sight is another difference between the two, the commercial has a larger front sight hood.

It has an adjustable 7rd magazine, with the pin screwed in, you can fire .22 shorts, remove the pin and you can fire 22l and 22lr.

This is the steel style butt plate, it has a small trapdoor and the stock is in-letted to hold a spare magazine. This example had the second magazine present, and it looks unused. I can't tell if it is the original or not, most of the aftermarket magazines are sold as LR only magazines.

And also....the mannlicher full style stocks are just too fricken cool thumb1
I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse......

Very nifty!  I particularly dig the cartridge adjustable magazine.  Is it problematic swapping out?  It's something I certainly would like to be able to do with my 22s. Especially if another shortage comes up and I just want to damage things on the cheap. :)

Tried it today, after I got the magazine unstickyfied from what ever Remsnot they gooped in it, the firing pin was the same way.. went from popping 22lr's to 22 shorts, even put a handful of CB rounds through it, worked like a charm thumb1 Takes 2 seconds to screw in the pin and reload it....NOTE TO SELF: Self, do not drop it in the grass, stick the pin in your pocket!!   dash2
Funny how each dropped lower on the target...especially the CB rounds.

I found the pin, by the way  thumb1
