MR-3100 and light Garand loads?
« on: October 20, 2021, 12:52:36 AM »
I still have 5-6 lbs of MR-3100 surplus powder left.  Looking to use it for some light loads for my new(old) CMP Garand. Load data hard to find.  Anyone still have the sheet that came with the 8 lb. keg?  Or know of other data?

Fooey, Looked up MR-3100 and it is supposedly the same as Accurate 3100, which is in the same class as 4831, a slow burning powder.  That said, the Garand is made to fire with a faster powder like W748 or IMR4895.  I have used W852 (which in the W760 class) with some success, though I wouldn't go any slower since the peak pressure is reached at the gas port instead of before the port.  That pressure peak could cause what is know as "battering of the action".  All in all, this subject might be more appropriate in the Ammunition or Reloading section.  Cheers, Bruce.
