Weird one! Need help
« on: February 07, 2018, 04:04:41 PM »
I just acquired another type 56 that is some kind of Frankenstein of a sort I cannot find precedent for. It is an older blade bayoneted version but it has a Tula 1951 bolt cover that has been force matched to the correct Chinese serial number as has the bolt carrier ( which I’m assuming is Chinese but I don’t know). I realize that anybody could electro pencil in numbers at anytime, but this thing is covered in cosmoline (foreign bolt cover included) and seems legit to me. Legit what? Is the question!  Thanks for your time and your expertise.

I havent seen albania do any electro-penciling on any of the carbines that in recent years came from there, but you never know I guess.

Welcome to the files!

What the import stamp on this one?  Likely #76 on the importers thread:

Quote

IO #3, IO Inc. out of Palm Bay, Florida:

IO INC,PALM BAY,FL
M56 7.62X39 CHINA
Type: Pin Punch
Location: Right Barrel between FSB and gas block
Notes: These guns were imported in 2Q 2014.  The last of the IOs that I've been able to track via import stamp.  Like the two predecessors, these were all Sino-Banians.

If so, then yes, refurbed type 56 by the Albanians.

The import stamp says Knox TN. I’m assuming Knoxville Tennessee?

Yes, these were imported several years ago from Albania.... we call them Sino-Banians

In the batch of sino-banians there were a few Russians that were not supposed to imported with the Chinese rifles, we call these a "Russian sneak"

You have a 1962 Chinese that came here via Albania and is sporting a few Russian parts.

Cool!!
So, if I de-cosmoline the thing will it change anything collectible about it? Assuming there is anything collectible about it other than I like it!

Kool, this is from the second the TGI batch:

Quote
TGI #2, Tennessee Gun International out of Knoxville, Tennessee:

SKS 7.62x39 JIANSHE
CHINA TGI KNOX TN
Type: Pin Punch
Location: Left/Bottom of Barrel between FSB and gas block
Notes: Second wave of Sino-Banians that arrived 4Q 2014.

Still a Sino-banian (IO and TGI guns were sourced from the same supplier it appears).  Note how crude your line-outs, grinding, and the electropencilling of the new numbers are compared to your typical Russian Refurb:

Cosmoline free now. The most cosmoline ive seen on any in my collection. My house smells of essence of cosmoline which is an essential oil. The wife is not happy with the smell or the mess in the oven!
The stock has four different inlays to patch damage. Very well done in my opinion. The stock does have numbers that match the Chinese numbers. The bolt was also force matched like the bolt carrier and the bolt cover. I’m assuming all are of Russian origin.

Could use an old pot and boil the metal parts in water....  outside?   I dunno, but I do it the old fashion way with lots of rags, q-tips etc.

I don't know about the carrier, but the bolt numerals were pin punched by hand. That's damn impressive. All the tools my grandpa ever owned are marked with his cattle brand which happen to be his initials in the exact same way.  When I see an that mark on a tool. I know where it came from.  thumb1

Guess, maybe, it's safe to "assume" it's not the importer then, it's a TGI as well..  I don't see an importer wasting time to hand dot matrix some numbers.

Also.. it's kinda funny, if done by hand and with a pin punch.... the "9" between the two have some similarities.

As Forest Gump would say "SKS's are like a box of chocolate, you never know what you're gonna get". Now that is a conversation piece.
