Title: Odd stock
Post by: Shoot The Refurbs on June 29, 2020, 01:45:30 AM
Yes i know, everything i don't know or understand yet is odd  rofl
Picked up this 11mil recently, and a couple odd features i noticed about it.
Everything about this rifle screams rushed production or field job to me.
The front sling mount has not been milled all the way, clear spot where it was going to be done but wasn't. the rear sling mount is not matching to the rifle and looks ridiculous sideways.
The stock is the real odd job. no numbers anywhere on it, clearly was not meant for this rifle, blade bayonet cutout originally, and looks like someone took a small chisel and just cut out the last bit to make the spike fit, the really odd thing about this area is the amount of cosmoline in the area where it was cut out making me think it has been in this configuration for a very long time.
the receiver hangs over the end of the wood and so does the butt plate. the wood appears to be beech or similar. one side shows lots and lots of fish scale lines and flekking. Also appears the stock was cut from a piece of wood with a knot in it. theres a crack on the side of the stock which looks as if it shouldn't impair firing.
The cut outs on the side of the stock which typically line up with the receiver by the bolt do not line up.

Overall the stock is a complete $#!1 show no doubt.
What intrigues me is what its made of and the lack of any stamps or numbers.
Because it seems to be made of beech i'm wondering if this one was a chinese rifle and made its way to albania and the stock is a field repair job or similar, but to be honest i'm not sure off the top of my head all of the countries that produced beech SKS stocks and don't want to assume.
Any insight is always appreciated.

Notice the fatter area on the stock before the takedown lever, and the slight angled cut down towards it to allow it to move.

Yup, that’s one of the Albanian beech replacement stocks. It has a side swivel mounted in the bottom swivel location. It was probably never cut for a blade, it’s just that the Enver Hoxha Ersatz Sawzall cut a bit deep in a few spots while they were delicately inletting the bayonet groove.

Hey, they trimmed the branches off of it before they chucked that rustic chunk of lumber on yer rifle, what more do you want fer cryin’ out loud!   bat1 rofl

Thanks for the info! I figured as much but when I assume 2 things usually happen  :-X
The bayonet groove they cut is literally the exact length of the bayo, so much so that it actually doesn't close all the way, it seems whoever the alby was that crafted this abomination didn't cut out enough in the groove. getting the TG back on is such a pain in the butt due to how tight the magazine and TG fit into this replacement.

Branches or no, she's still a bit of an ugly girl P32 chuckles1

Cool little piece of history though.

Fantastic example of the fish scale effect, too.

She would be neat from a history standpoint if only the gastube wasn't mismatched and possibly refinished. On certain variants one mismatch piece isn't as big of a deal as its often so hard to find, albys and romys come to mind.
On more common variants like chinese rifles if I take the gamble online or at a LGS that won't let me disassemble them and find a mismatch piece it puts the rifle on a short list of ones i'd be willing to part with in order to advance the collection, and I think this one might fall into that category.
We'll see, maybe she'll grow on me as i'm certain she'd make a good shooter if i could get her in a chinese stock that fits properly.

That sure is a funky way to mount a rear sling swivel.Maybe the stock was made and fitted by a blind man?I'm sure you could have a nice fitting stock made for it if you'd like to go that route or you could hang it on a wall and laugh at it with your friends.

All things considered, they did actually do a nice job putting the wrong swivel there....far more craftsmanship than the rest of the beaver chew whittle job.  It does look much better with the gun hiding all that.

I am curious though if perhaps whacking folk over the noggin was common practice there. The secondary gouge could be from a closed bayonet and some serious force.  My recent Classic seems to be used as such, bent bayonet, and a big nasty gouge right there in the channel, granted it was an original stock, but it did actually break out two of the handguard vent notch pieces...and pretty much all the way through the bayo channel.  That big ol' crack in the right side of the stock has me wondering.

Update:
She did not grow on me, but at the same time I didn't really want to let her go.
Did the next best thing, and gave her to my old man.
She'll make a good shooter and the stock isn't exactly something even most purists would be too fussed if he refinished which I imagine he will. (plus some a**hole already did the mismatched hand guard)
Hopefully the old man finds some of the same joy I do in these 'old commie guns'. It would be cool to share that with someone close.
I'll post another update if ever we do something along the lines of refinishing it. I'd like to fix the bayonet cutout along with a couple other defects, but we'll see.
Here's one last picture of her as I noticed I never put one of her all together.

Hahaha, nah you had to have put up with me being a little $#!t for the first 17 years to get that kinda treatment  chuckles1
But for real, the old man has done so much for me including making me into the man I am today, the least I can do is try to share something with him that makes me happy.
hopefully he catches the bug like I have, and to steal an expression from a certain keystone member here, the only way to avoid mosin i mean, sks #2 is to avoid sks #1 and i'm trying to encourage him lose that battle! rofl
