I needed to fill a hole on my collection so when this byf44 came up for sale at as good price I got it. I already a dual tone byf44 but it was made in 1945. But with Mauser P.38's the year on the slide can fool you. Mauser used slides marked byf42 into early 1943 and byf44 slides into early 1945 until Mauser changed to the svw code . So I needed a Mauser P.38 that was made in 1944. This one was made in September of 1944. The run of 1944 P.38s was the greatest production with 145,000 P.38's produced in the year 1944. While this P.38 is not rare it is in great condition.

One of these days when I finally pick up a P.38 it'll likely be a Mauser Oberndorf. That seems to be the factory I start with, and/or end up with, when I have just one representative of s firearm in my collection.

P32 the 1944 Mauser byf44's are probably the lowest priced next to the Spreewerk P.38's. You can get the Mauser 1944's for under $1000, usually around $800 to $900.

Blicero the 1945 Mauser D block is the most common but I have seen several 1945 C block dual tones. The use of phosphate actually began in December of 1944 with the B block Mauser P.38's. I haven't had a chance to view any of the B block pistols.
