You could try out the results of the tung oil under the buttplate and see how it looks...but you have to post pics of the underside of her buttplate if you do oil her up there...makes the gun porn pornier.  rofl

I got a little bit of spare time the other night to try my hand at using wood bleach. It worked pretty good to remove the dark stains in my donor stock. I was afraid that it would remove all of the color of the wood and turn it bone white, but it did not.

When I get another chance to work on it, I plan to sand on the old serial # some more and get the stock ready to apply the tung oil.
I did find a NOS handguard on ebay, and am in the process of stripping it down. Should have everything I need to finish this project up soon.

Lookin good!

Wouldn't amber shellac be more 'D-like'?

Not according to what XXXSKS has in the guide.
"These rifles came with a military style stock and have a dull tung  oil finish. "
http://chinesesks.weebly.com/d.html

The ones he shows for reference do not look like amber shellac to me.  think1

Ah..  ok.   I get used to all the other late builds that have a thicker orange/yellow color.

Yeah, I believe that the rest of the ones that take AK Mags are amber shellac besides the Type 84 and the D. Just from what I see on the guide.

Brian, simply 'top shelf' work. She looks super. Punch out the toothpick and replace with a #6 finish nail. The point on the nail will help align the ferrel. Dremel it flush on both sides. No worries it will shear after that.

Thanks Marcus, it has been a pretty good project. I actually have a pack of the correct Ferrel pins (or whatever you call them) I got like 5 of them off ebay for like $6 shipped.

They are a PITA to install. You have to peen them or shorten them first to fit. Use the #6. It will take you 5 mins to do the job.

I installed a couple before and they didn't seem to be to bad, but I've got some #6 finish nails I might just give your trick a try and see how I like it. Thanks for the tip.

Well I haven't finished up the wood stock yet, but I did get to take the D out and put 160 rounds through it. Everything operated as it should, and I hit everything I aimed at so that was a plus. Shooting it in the plastic stock reinforced how much I do not like this combat exchange stock. Only plus about it was I could fold the stock and put two guns in one hard case.  :)
My only complaint about the D was the lack of the bolt hold open. So unless you count your shots your last pull of the trigger will be a click, oh the mag is empty. You also wont be able to load with stripper clips unless you have 3 hands.  cry1
It was a fun day out at a buddies acreage shooting holes in the air.  tommy1
Here's what we had to work with. (WOW look at all that plastic)

Here are the 3 I took out.

The Marlin XT-22MR I picked up for $100 off a local Facebook gun buy/sell/trade. I put a scope on it I had laying around and after about 10 rounds sighting it in I was pretty impressed with it.
The PSA AR-47, is my first completed AR build. They had the complete upper on sale a while back for $339 and free shipping. I got the stripped lower for $49, and lower build kit for $59 during one of their holiday sales also with free shipping. Picked up a 10, 20 and 30 round C-Products magazine and I'm into this for under $500. Watched a youtube video on how to assemble a AR lower and an hour later (15 mins spent looking for a detent that went flying) I was ready for the range.
I put 220 rounds of steel through it with one failure to eject at round 125. Pretty happy with it, and I am not really an AR fan, but thought I would try one in 7.62x39. So far I like it.  thumb1

Now that looks like a table of goodness!  How do you like the ar-47?  Thanks for the update!
When the Cambrian measures were forming, They promised perpetual peace.
They swore, if we gave them our weapons, that the wars of the tribes would cease.
But when we disarmed They sold us and delivered us bound to our foe,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: "Stick to the Devil you know."

So far I really like it, and it ran better than I expected. I put on a flip up rear site and after about 10-15 rounds I was right on at 25 yards. I was easily hitting bowling pins and 6 inch gongs at 75 and 100 yards all day. I'd like to take my time and put it on paper at 50 and 100 yards, but didn't have a chance this weekend. When I do I will start a separate thread.
