Title: Izhevsk 1941 SVT-40 #3
Post by: Bacarnal on November 23, 2021, 02:44:03 PM
Finally went down to Alabama to see my buddy and pick up the SVT-40 I mentioned in another thread.  Ended up being another 1941 Izhevsk but this one is a Finnish capture.  Took all day for the drive, so detailed inspection didn't happen till Sunday.  The bore is dark but with strong lands and grooves.  Took me a while to get it cleaned out since there seemed to be a lot of dust build up from sitting in a closet for a number of years.  Spent a good part of the day cleaning and removing surface rust.  There is no finish to speak of.  The bolt and carrier are force matched to the receiver.  I discovered several cracks in the stock around the wrist, in the finger grooves and had a piece break off at the left rear of the receiver cut.  Glued and clamped those areas.  Since I still have an abundance of brass stock pins, a few hours yesterday were taken up getting them set.  Made the poor stock look like Pin Head.  Today was cutting off the excess and flush filing the pins.  All in all, she doesn't look too bad considering she HAS been to the Wars.

That rifle looks great with that wear. Very cool. Nice job on the pins.

Thanks, Bob.  I need to find a way to "brown" the pins so they don't stand out so much.

Hey Bac, where'd you find those pins? I think I'm going to need a few for an SKS stock repair?

Also, don't know how it would work on brass, but have you tried some Super Black? Or maybe Aluminum Black?

GG, I got the pins from Brownells.   I might try super blue or lemon juice. Thanks!!

Yeah, I meant Super Blue, LOL. Very nice repair and clean up on that SVT BTW. I had my hands on one of them for $850 back in the day and thought it was "expensive". Back then I was a big $69-$99 Mosin guy and could bring myself to part with that much money on a 7.62x54r firearm. Been banging my head over that one ever since. :-[

Love the SVT 40's.  Something about their look that is just cool.  Congrats on your new rifle.  Looks like you did a good repair and hope it is a good shooter for you.

Nice SVT and repair job. I traded 2 19/30's and 2 Chicom SKSs for mine a few years back. I too couldn't part with the asking price of $1300. But I'd had my rifles for quite some time, so I didn't that have much into them. PAX

Nice Finnish capture SVT. Very cool!  8) thumb1

Since the pins are brass, you might try a cotton swab dampened with household ammonia to dab on the ends and oxidize a bit of the copper.

GG, I think they do make Black.  I just have Blue on hand   thumb1.
Thanks echo1 and BMont.  Hopefully it will be a good shooter.
Thanks and thanks for the tip, Jon!  I'll give it a try.

Nice Finn captured SVT and nice stock repair too! Stock is in typical Finn refinish.

Electro-penciled matching Finn captured SVT are quite rare. Congrats!

Haha, I was looking back at the stock repair pics again and all I could think of was "acupuncture" I'm sure the stock feels better now, LOL.

Tried the ammonia on the pins to no avail.  Surprisingly the Super Blue browned them up quickly.
Thanks all for the comments and advice.  thumb1

Thanks, GG.  No worries, Jon.  Have to experiment to see what works.  Just got to touch up around the pins to blend the colors.

You could just get a can of undercoating and spray the whole thing....You know, give it that BUBBA look!! You could tell everyone it was the Soviet's SVT version of the SKS BBQ paint. rofl rofl

Ran two mags though her yesterday as well as a couple mags through another one I was having problems with.  Both fired great on 1.5 setting with Russian and Hungarian Light ball and are accurate.  The Ka Chunk of the bolt operating takes some getting used to, though.

Are you sure it's a Ka Chunk and not a Ka Ch*nk? chuckles1 chuckles1
