49 SKS- 0Ю 304
« on: December 31, 2023, 05:56:38 PM »
This week I saw a 49 for sale and responded. From the pictures in ad, I saw that the cleaning rod numbs were equal, so an early build. The picture of magazine did not show if a rivet was present. Also no picture of the date or star on the cover. But from what was shown, I could tell that it was a Westrifle sks (frankenpinned and date on a laminate stock), but the seller had bought it from a store in Ontario. Also another thing that looked different was the gas tube had a grey tint to it. The cover also looked like it had been reblued as there were 2 different shades to it.
By the way it worked out to $775.00 U.S. for the rifle.

The cover had been ground due to pitting and the 19 on the date was missing. I removed the bluing and saw grind marks.

Final results are here =

This one makes a nice addition to my collection. Top 4 are 49's and bottom 2 are early 50's.

Nice  8) That’s a collection of rarities that is not easy for a Canadian collector  thumb1 … and would be nearly out of reach for a U.S. collector

Beautiful collection. One question is why did they use a wrist pin on some and not others?

Replacement laminate stocks all had wrist crossbolts installed.  That is always an area of high stress and prone to cracks.  Just design improvements as time progresses I suppose.

So original (Non laminate) stocks didn't have wrist bolts, but new made replacement (Laminate) stocks were made with them. I always wondered why some had them and some didn't, and never paid attention to them being laminated stocks.

That's the norm, but like everything Russian SKS, it's not always the rule.  Sometimes hardwoods got rear crossbolts too:

I'm not sure if I've seen laminate stocks w/o the crossbolt, but there may be some floating around out there and it wouldn't surprise me at all.

That's a really nice gun Mitch!  I love the ruby red finish on the letter series laminates.  thumb1 thumb1

Thanks, me too. It's like fire in good lighting. I love laminates overall. Definitely more durable it seems regardless of crossbolt.
