Just came up with this sweet S&W model 639. Check out the elephant ears adjustable sights. Weighs about as much as a fire hydrant. Makes shooting a 9mm. like shooting a 22.  8)

Oh wow...   Never heard of one, but I'm not a big pistol kinda guy either.

Looks fairly high-speed low-drag.   8)

Oh a retro 80's stainless wonder 9 thumb1. Me likey, a bunch...Almost hear Miami Vice theme playing rofl

My 639 is just a little later in production, it has the squared triggerguard, first production 639s had the rounded style like yours. Model 39 9mms have quite a long history, back in the mid 50's. I think they were developed for military use, but ended up as civilian and LEO weapons. It was my very first centerfire handgun in the early mid 90s. It is a sweet SA/DA shooter thumb1

An Officer that was a long time partner and good friend of mine carried a Mod 39 for years. They are very reliable firearms,  well balanced and shoot good.

They make these in a blued version?  Several calibers?

They were 8rd single stack mags, you can find 10rd magazines, they were usually 9mm, and there was a few variants of the Mod 39 made. Like any S&W if carring a dash after the Model meant something like a change or mod. In the number series, a 2 number model is first gen, three digit model is 2nd gen, 4 digit model is 3rd gen.
Mod 39 could be either steel or alloy frame, steel slide
Mod 439 alloy blued frame/blued steel slide
Mod 539 blued carbon steel slide and frame
Mod 639 was full stainless
Prodction was over by about mid 80s

The Mod 39 led to the Mod 59, 459, 559 and 659 production, with 14rd high cap double stack in 9mm, then the rest is history
