Refinished stock on a Chinese type 56 SKS
« on: December 10, 2020, 12:41:16 PM »
Greetings,

In an attempt to satisfy my inner Bubba, I decided to refinish a horribly ugly stock on a Chinese Type 56 SKS. This was a while back, and I got the SKS for like $200 from Classic Firearms. I decided to try to replicate the red shellac that the Russian guns have. Here are the end results and some before photos.

And some before photos:

I can almost smell the cosmoline looking at those pictures. Sadly this rifle is no longer mine, as I traded it away.

One question did the stock match the gun?

Great outside photo you posted.

You did a good job on the stock.

No, the stock didn't match. I did really like the way it turned out.

A guy wanted to trade for it, and I ended up doing a straight trade for a Egyptian Hakim.

I think I did alright, though the Hakim is nowhere near as fun to shoot as an SKS.

Hell yeah you did alright, IMO.  Hakims are a blast.

I love the pair of Hakim's I have... Like shooting a really loud railroad tie with little recoil.
I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse......

Leave the gun, take the cannoli.

I said I was an addict........I didn't say I had a problem

As nice as that looks, nobody will ever believe that it came from Sweaty Ben.

Seems like Hakims are going for around $800 these days, so yeah, I’d say you did alright  thumb1

The cosmoline photos definitely take me back, mine was absolutely plastered, too.

That stock is beautiful...can you take us through the process?
