Century Aussie L1A1
« on: March 29, 2020, 10:58:21 PM »
Since it's kinda dead around here, I thought I'd post my goto .308.  It's an Aussie lower with a Century Inch Upper.  This is one of the few I didn't build since I knew almost nothing about the locking shoulders, so I took it to a smith nearby in Indiana who does.  When I got it back she would use metric mags, but not inch mags. I later found out Century was famous for that, even though it has the wide cut for the inch mag's lip.  Had to carefully inlet the mag well so it would accept inch mags, and now she definitely takes the proper mags and hates metrics.
The receiver finish is Ceracote.  Nobody around here seems to do parkerizing anymore, and the two "grays" I chose seemed to work well.  Finished it out with Aussie Wood.  Shoots great!!

That is a real beauty!  thumb1 I second the love for the wood furniture!

They are robust firearms with an interesting place in history and very pleasurable to shoot. Being an Australian parts kit, it’s at least possible that it saw service in Vietnam.

My only FAL is a mixmaster, but it shoots great.

Thanks, LD and P32!  P32, I read your post before I posted this and STILL can't believe GM doesn't have one wink1.
I've owned three of them before this, one an inch with plastic furniture and two built up from the Austrian STG58 parts by Freedom (before they went to scheisse) and Century.  For some reason I just didn't like the way the bipod felt, but didn't want to neuter them, so once I had this one built, they went to fund other projects.
Here's some pix of where I had to inlet for the mag.

I've owned 3 Century builds that all ran just fine.

In fact, I'm working on getting one of them back.

Never had one that was sporting wood, though......

LD, for me, the wood just feels right.  If yours are metric, I've seen the Isreali wood around a lot and it looks comfortable.
I did have some trouble cycling with some contours of M80 Ball.  Yes, even though it's supposed to be NATO standard, every country seems to have their own bullet contour.
Heck, the US seems to have several PLUS different cannelures.  It seemed the sharper the point, it would hit the barrel face and jam.  A fatter rounder contour had no trouble.  I polished two bullet guides on the barrel face as if it were a Garand barrel and the problem was solved.

When I get it, I'll definitely be on the hunt for some wood.

A bit off topic, but have you guys ever seen an AR15 decked out with wood? I think they look great, even if it's not OEM.

I've always wanted one of these.  Maybe one day, but likely not.  cry1

Beautiful gun OP.  thumb1

Larry, did you see LC's AR? (photobucket pictures are kind of sucky as it's a really old post, but it's a beauty) https://sks-files.com/index.php?topic=761.msg9396#msg9396
