Title: Brazilian M1908/34
Post by: Phosphorus32 on November 03, 2020, 03:28:43 PM
I've been on a bit of a Brazilian streak lately, went from one to four in about 2 months. This is a Brazilian M1908/34, large ring Mauser chambered in 7x57mm. According to Ball's MMROTW there were 100,500 made for the Brazilian contract, but they don't appear very often. I don't know how many of those were imported into the US. These look a lot like a VZ24 but they aren't. They were referred to internally by CZ as the 12/33. El Salvador and Brazil are the only countries that signed contracts for this particular model, and the 5600 El Salvadorans are even rarer.

From the serial number you might think it should be in 100% condition, it's not (old corrosion at the end of the barrel and upper barrel band), but it's certainly not bad ;)

I really like the look and feel of this 22" barrel short rifle with its bent bolt, clearly configured for versatility in carry with the side/bottom swivel options. I have to say, my old myopic eyes don't acquire that front sight very well with its narrow protective ears but it probably wasn't an issue for young Brazilian troops.

rofl I'll pass on the man-scaping, thank-you very much.

My first Brazilian Mauser was an FN Model 1894 long rifle 5.5 years ago for $150 at a local gun show. It took another 5.3 years to acquire another Brazilian. In September/October I scored a Model 1935 long rifle made by Mauser Oberndorf (love the Mauser banner), a Model 1908 long rifle made by DWM and this CZ Model 1908/34 short rifle. As an opportunistic broad 19th and 20th century milsurp collector, streaks just happen sometimes  ;)

The latter three Brazilians were considerably more than that steal of a deal on the Model 1894  :)) In the last few years, the collector's market has sat up and taken notice of the South American contract rifles :o

Nice,  thumb1 mine has the heavy native light wood stock, a true Brazilian, Made in Itajuba, the Brazilian arms factory. It's slightly smaller than a K98 and feels like it weighs 5 more pounds.
