Sometimes it's easier to ask for forgiveness, than permission. :)

I'd never lie about something so grave as a Mosin Nagant!  didnt do

But yes on the small mallet.  Only sure way to cycle 'em w/o bruising your hand badly.  rofl

think1  sounds like an excuse to talk ones self out of a new addiction.. you know.. Self......their terrible junky weapons, gotta use a mallet... I wants one, I needs one... but, but, the mallet thing..... but we needs the precious.. but I'll have to change my signature line and GM will bust my balls... Curse us and crush us...my precious..
I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse......

Leave the gun, take the cannoli.

As an example, this one looks pretty clean
The 600+, in the ball park nowadays, or is the Seller in the parking lot?

I hope not. $600 for a refurbished M44 from one of the two peak production years (1944 and 1945) with very worn finish and an R Guns billboard style import mark. Double Eagle Pawn is always high in my experience.

Roger that! The finish definitely appears to be 2good2B for a '44.  nea1

It's a genuine Russian refurbished finish, so I wouldn't hesitate in that regard. About 99.98% of the Mosin M91/30, M44, M38s that you find will be refurbished. It's just that the post-WWII refurbishment finish doesn't hold up well to use. It seems it was more of a long term storage preservation finish. The handguards and foreends of the stock tend to wear first when a US owner disassembles the rifle and slides those barrel bands over those surfaces.

If your wanting to just try one out to satisfy a curiosity, Chinese Type 53s are a carbon copy of the M44, typically a little cheaper, kind of like SKSs, sometimes they vary from great condition to... well... just parts. When they were imported I picked up 2, the metal and bores were great, the stocks were a little rough, nothing terrible, just no finish.

Indeed, they are usually well worn in, thus have nice triggers and shoot well. I picked up a pair of Type 53s back in the good old days (just 7 years ago) of one for $99, two for $89 from Southern Ohio Gun (RIP). One was original matching; really beat the odds on that one.

I looked around the interweb - taking in the sage advice from folks here, and a couple of local owners... I put out feelers with four nearby LGS for a consignment or pawn.

Someone had a pair of them on the AK-Files, if you are on there.
My Avatar is a pic of the real "Ghost" SKS in honor of xxxsks(joe). It is a pic of a fully decked out SKS in Capco hunter's kit. This was mine, the only other pic I had ever seen of one was Joe's.

My humble opinion ... if you are getting just one.  Get the M 39 if your a shooter.  They are more money but there is nothing similar vs the standard Russian 91/30.  I have them all... but I have way more M39s

I'm not on the AK Files, but I'll definitely check out the 39. Tks!

Yeah, I agree. My favorite standard military issue Mosin. It's too bad the days of $350-400 M39s are gone for good, but they're still worth it.

My antique 1896/1970 M39

I like M39's too, they are fine shooters. But if I were to only have one I'd choose a non-Finned Sestroretsk M91, ideally a really early one (they are not easy to find, sadly). The good (and bad) news are: there are enough Mosin variations for all of us  :))

I've got my eye on two M44's. Minty '53 Polish and same for an Izhvesk. Both are already over 700 with a couple of days to go. Ugh.

Wow! The mint Polish ones have been $500+ guns for a long time, but an Izhevsk for that kind of scratch is a new phenomenon.

Came across a 1970 M39 on GB a few days ago - not even close to BMont's beauty, price went felony stupid so I had to pass.
