Gas cut-off - North Korean SKS

Greetings,
My North Korean SKS is missing the gas -cut off unit.   Anyone out in SKS land have an extra one or has made a replacement unit ?   The gas cyl housing has the hole and stop pin but the cut off assembly is gone.   Assistance and/or suggestions appreciated.  Thanks

Compared to the 59/66, it is very simple construction.   The one I have seen (I believe it is pictured in the N.Korean,E.German,etc section of this forum), is made with a nut threaded on the cylindrical steel shaft that passes thru the gas cyl housing. the other end of the shaft has what appears to be a small piece of angle iron attached (welded?), the flat side against the housing has a quarter circle arch cut/machined that is limited to the quarter turn by a pin present in the housing .  The other part of the angle iron serves as the grip surface to turn the cut-off.    Sorry for the drawn out description ( in this case a picture IS worth 1000 words).

They vary somewhat in construction but a few detailed pictures of mine are shown in the link below. I don’t know anyone making reproductions and a spare original would have to be in the non-existent category. Very simple construction.

I have a question of Phosphorus32.  Do you know the position of the cut-off when the gas port is closed ?

We have such great resources here.

I'd sure like to see the inside of that setup. Could be a simple butterfly valve or possibly a ball valve with a hole in it.

I don't think it would be hard to fab one if we could lay our hands on one and produce a set of drawings.

The shaft simply has a hole drilled through it at the same angle as the gas port in the barrel. The pictures were taken in direct sunlight to light up the interior of the gas block, so there is a bit of a shadow cast on the gas valve shaft.

Tab horizontal = fully open


Tab rotated partially = partially closed


Tab perpendicular to bore axis = fully closed

So all of the pictures are in the same place, here are the rest.

I believe the gas cut off shaft is brass round stock with a squared end on the tab (right) side, and a threaded end on the left side for the star nut. A small hole is drilled through that end for the cotter pin. Presumably they constructed it first, then drilled a pilot hole through the shaft at the right angle and finally drilled it out to size to allow unimpeded gas flow.

I think it will be a relatively straightforward project, good luck with it!  Would love to see what you come up with.  As a matter of fact, would love to see the SKS as it is right now.  Not too many NKs out there, every one we get photo docs on is a win!

I must admit I'm a computer retard.   Will try for some pictures in the future.
Some history on this N.Korean.  First I have no idea where I picked it up (most likely back in the days of the"used & abused" Chinese SKS's that were $67.00 at gun shows).  It is all matching numbers but does have a good deal of a"scaley pitting"on muzzle end of bbl, trigger guard and magazine.  No Import marks.   I has a US M15 grenade launcher sight base adapted (screwed) to the left side of the receiver ( I have seen the exact adaptation on at least one other pictured N.Korean).

That’s a new serial number. The receiver serial number is mostly covered by the GL sight.

Thanks guys.  Sorry for the glare obscuring the EP serial No.   The stock is laminated but some yahoo did a shellac job on it before I got It.  The stock is numbered but can't make out the numbers
