NOT a rifle, but East German-related
« on: February 16, 2020, 09:21:26 PM »
Mods, I contemplated starting this in Miscellaneous/Ammunition, but I thought it might be more applicable here. If it needs to be moved, I apologize. Anyway, a couple of East German Karabiner-S ammunition pouches. I'm not well versed on the evolution of NVA camouflage patterns-what does the pattern on the cloth pouch tell you for ballpark years of production?

Thanks, guys! I've had to look long for these, and I'm blessed to have them. I guess I've browsed hundreds of "East German SKS Ammo Pouch" listings (East German/NVA grenade pouches, I think) with no luck, but eventually, these turned up. Now for a proper sling...

The camo pouch reminds me of the Flectarn camo that they've used from 1990 to present.

Not sure if East Germany used it as well, or not? I remember the Rain Pattern from the East Germany days, but that's about it.

*Edit: The "Rain Pattern" I referred to was actually the "Strichtarn" Camoflage, which was the "line pattern" camo used by the NVA. It was developed in 1960 and used 1965-1990.

Those are both great ammo pouches!  thumb1 The leather one looks to have the same material and construction techniques as the East German Makarov pistol holsters, and has a nice clear NVA (Nationale Volksarmee) marking. It seems likely that it was for use with a service uniform, whereas the camouflage cloth pouch would be for a field (battle) uniform. The camouflage one I would guess predates the Strichtarn pattern.

Casual web browsing seems to indicate the camo pattern is M58 Blumentarn or Flachtarn, with several items produced in this pattern dated from 1958 to around the mid '60s. That would seem to square with Karabiner-S production dates.
