Chinese T79/85 serial numbers
« on: May 13, 2023, 09:10:21 AM »
What do you guys this of these serial numbers? I definitely see the year designator being used.  Note: the years in the second column represent the model, not the year made.  I know…. Its way out of order.  😬

1776 will commence again if you try to take our firearms... It doesn't matter how many Lenins you get out on the street begging for them to be taken.

I didn't even know the Chinese SVD (Dragunovs) were also known as the Type 79 (or Type 79/85, I wonder if that 79/85 is just a US collectors' term). Upon thinking about it further, they're probably all starting from 1979 as 1st year of production, with the first digit being the year code for those in the first two table pictures. It sure would help to have some more feature data etc. in the tables.

I'm guessing all the Type 79 examples in the "green table" below chambered in 7.62x51mm (aka NDM 86) for the American market, were made later, i.e., 10th year, 1988. That seems to sync with the export or American collector's term of NDM 86.

I couldn't get this table to load from the original post so I grabbed it from GB. Helps to be able to see the headings  :))

I thought about that too P32, but there are several t85s starting with a 2 and I know that cant be 1980.  Cant be a 20 either because thats way past the import ban.

Is there a  79 or 85 ideogram stamped on these rifles?

No idea but the ‘none’ is irritating…. need to know if they are 79s or 85s

I'd like to see some pictures of features and markings and find out the differences between the Type 79 and 79/85. Is the latter just the "S" version, shorter with folding stock, or something like that.

Something funny going on with those SNs with a leading 2...seems inconsistent.

Unless they saved on stamping zeros for a while and only added another digit mid 1986?

I can’t seem to find pictures of the markings on these..

It looks like the nato chambered variant is actually an NDM-86 made for US export.  I would say their serials represent 1986

Seems they also had NDM-86 chambered in 7.62X54 that were regular old t79/85s. I did find out the only difference between the 79 and 85 is the barrel twist rate.

Good to see examples of the actual markings  thumb1

Interesting. The NDM-86 must be just a model number they came up with for the commercial export market. Some new made in 7.62 NATO and some refurbished perhaps in the original 7.62x54R chambering.

I don't see any first year guns in the tables, but jjjxlr8 said it was just a sample, so not all of the data.

People are real protective of these SNs for some reason.

See dragunov.net

There is a survey registry and I just asked for them to share the data and why.
