Romanian WASR 2
« on: June 06, 2017, 02:03:58 AM »
I wanted, ok, had the hankering, err, was lead astray to try a new commie caliber, the 5.45x39. Being true Romanian :o didn't help my temptation any either, as I haven't managed to sniff out another Romanian SKS. It's basically the 1974 revamped version of the Ak47, the round that has also been called the "Poison Bullet"

I dug around and found a sweet bundle for a pretty decent price locally. Came with 3 goodie goodie Russian Ak74 bakelite mags, guess he threw the original away. Also to round out the bundle was a tin and almost a half, 1680rds of Bulgarian 7n6 surplus, the carbon copy of the Russian stuff, that has been since banned, and the spam can opener thumb1. The rifle is an actual Romanian build, typical rough finish work, the sights have a real slight rightward cant, but there was no mag wobble. All of that is since forgiven, like a typical Ak, function triumphs form, I admit it.. it kind of impressed me with the two magazines worth I put through it. The previous owner had installed a Tapco trigger group, which was a sweet addition, it shot perfect, and was shockingly accurate in the distance I was messing with. One other difference I do notice and did like, is almost no muzzle rise and very low recoil when compared to an Ak in the x39 round.

Maybe...... I should have just broke down and got one earlier  chuckles1

Nice GM!   thumb1
One other thing you may want to consider is changing out the sheppards hook pin retaining spring for a Tapco pin retaining plate that more securely locks in the pins where at times the sheppards hook at times will allow them to walk outwards of the reciever.  The Tapco is very inexpensive and relatively easy to install.

You need a nice Romanian contract VZ24 to go with your SKSs, WASR-10, WASR-2 and TTC. You probably already have one tucked away.

Didn't the atf try to ban this ammo recently?

Nice get.   thumb1.

They didn't try.....they did...both times.. banned officially in 2014, then again a judge upheld the ATF decision in 2016.  They banned the surplus Russian/Bulgarian steel core 7n6 ammo, deeming it as armor piercing pistol ammo. Once again, Polish Kbk wz/89S Fabryka Bronie Onyx and Ak74 style pistols bit the hands that created/imported/desired them, if it were just rifles, and no pistols using the round, it might still be imported... At one time, it was rumoured a company was once going down the pistol version road with I believe the PSL....that changed really fricken quick, how long would it take to ban x54r and how much of it is steel core ammo.

There are half a dozen, maybe more makers of grungy non corrosive commercial 5.45mm, Wolf, Silver/Brown Bear, Tula, even Hornady, and with the popularity, ammo shouldn't be much of an issue. Plus it is fairly common to find seal surplus tins and even sealed crates.

I recommend lxpony brand retainers... :D

And that's not a shepherd's hook in there...  fart1 Also the hammer spring should be braided, not straight.

I also have a WASR 2 as my 5.45, a very fun shooter. Congrats!

I fixed it for you FC.. thumb1

It's just bone stock rifle, nothing spectacular, no uber super tactical stuffs. It is a hoot to shoot, and some of the horror stories I heard didn't come true with it.

Also the hammer spring should be braided, not straight.

As far as the original owner who I bought it from told me, it is as it came from the dealer.

Caliber is about it..

A WASR 2 is 5.45x39, WASR 3 is 5.56NATO and the WASR 10, 7.62x39, both single stack 10rd and 30rd Century conversion.... there was a WASR 22 also...in .22lr, I don't remember seeing many of them when compared to the larger centerfire rifles.

GM, what are the SAR-1 (7.62x39), SAR-2 (5.45x39), and SAR-3's (5.56x45) claims to fame? I know they were prior to the WASR's, and had the original double stack mags. Anything else notable about those?

Why did they use the German Wieger 5.56 mags for the SAR-3's? That was a big determing factor for not buying the SAR-3, for myself. Wieger mags were more expensive and harder to find back then. I don't see much of them at all anymore. I was always curious as to why the Romanian arsenal would choose a German magazine for their 5.56 version.

Ok.. what I do know..and hope I get it right. :)

The SAR series predates the WASR... imported I'm thinking between '99 through '03 or '04 I believe.. SAR-1 was x39, SAR-2 was 5.45mm and SAR-3 was 5.56mm... biggest differences on the SAR, are no threaded barrel, more standard AKM front/rear trunnion, and the mag well dimples. They were basically made during the assault weapon ban time frame. As I recall, these and the very early WASRs were the ones that kind of left a bad Romanian taste with slappy triggers and canted sights......but, now they seem to be sought after due to being easier to un-ban because, unlike the WASR, they use a more standard AKM pattern receiver.

As for the, why the use of Wieger mags...no clue, when other magazines could have been selected...I only know it shares magazines with the StG-940.

My WASR 2 was even mag picky, refusing to feed out of Tapcos and commercial Bulgarians and Polish. It feed fine from expensive Russian, East German and ((10)) Bulgarian mags though.
On the other hand, my Arsenal SLR-104 runs great on any mag I have tried.

BTW the naming convention with the Romanians even extended to the PAR series... 1 was 7.62, 2 was (presumably) 5.45, and 3 was 5.56.

GM, what are the SAR-1 (7.62x39), SAR-2 (5.45x39), and SAR-3's (5.56x45) claims to fame? I know they were prior to the WASR's, and had the original double stack mags. Anything else notable about those?

My SAR 1 is near the top of my favorite AK list.
