Title: 10 equals Perfection
Post by: Greasemonkey on October 10, 2017, 05:49:28 PM
More of my big bore fetish.. while not true blue hard core "big" bore like the .44Mag, or a .500 S&W, this makes up for the lack of size with shear capacity. It's Glocks big girl, the G20 in 10mm.  I picked the bundle up yesterday, there were 4 15rd mags and 3 10 rounders included, as well as a shoulder holster and another double mag pouch. The icing on this cake was the crate of ammo.. it's mostly old, all of it is very clean and now most is a collectors item like the Black Talon stuff, those are some high dollar boxes.

I usually skip "modern" stuff like this, but.. strangely it is by no means new. It's a Gen2, I mean they just released a Gen 5, near as I can find, the AU prefix and 3 digit serial dates it to January 1990, it was among the first lot of G20 pistols released to the general public. So, it's basically almost 30 years old, if it were an auto, it could have classic car tags in Va.. I have also emailed Glock to verify my findings, they can and usually do provide a born on date/history when requested.

I know.. it's a Glock...love them or hate'em.. like an AK, they just work, and most of the world militarys, Fed agencies, state and local LEO's have adopted them in some form or another since the first one rolled out. And for a polymer hand gun to take the beating a 10mm can dish out for almost 30 years and still be tight.. it's pretty impressive.

While these two share nothing in common other than the caliber, they are roughly about the same in age.

The seller handed me the crate, said take the crate too... it is a x54r Czech ammo crate.. I didn't expect to find an assortment such as this hidden with in..

Black pistol...Glock...oh-oh, scary  :o  chuckles1

I have a G30 in .45ACP (11.4mm), so small frame and big bore, not much bigger than the 10mm.

Do you like 10mm better than .45 or 9mm, or I guess the closest comparison in bore, .40?

Well technically.. this is Glock #2.. I do have a Gen 3 G31 in .357Sig..

great round  thumb1 9mm bullet in a necked 10mm case.. al la a modern Tokarev round.. It's a muzzle flipping handfull..

think1   eww.. tough one with out starting a this is better than that..   But.. since you asked  :)

My feelings.. opinions.. bla bla.. ok

I look at it like this... the 9mm and .45acp both great rounds in their own right, both have an outstanding history and service record... but.....they are old, and yes I have and enjoy quite a few in each caliber.

Now before someone falls off the rocker..and gets pissed.. let me explain. thumb1

I think..at least in my experience the 10mm surpasses both.. when you break it down, your dealing with a round that is equal to or greater than a 357 Mag... which through history is a flat out known man stopper. It was the big dog on the block till the advent of Elmer Keiths .44 Magnum hit the scene.

From a cartridge stand point.. it gives one alot of flexiblity as well.. you can load it to equal a 9mm/.40 S&W/.45acp or you can go all in, balls out to almost approach a .41 Magnum power level, this depends purely on the pistols strength and such. Loads like Corbon can shove a 135 grain bullet at 1400fps, Buffalo Bore does a 180gr at 1350fps.. or really heavy load, 220gr at 1,200 fps, and even Winchester makes 175 Grain Silvertip "hunting" ammo.. Or on the flip side, one can get tame soft shooting 1000fps American Eagle target ammo.

In the end.. I think one ends up with a highly versatile handgun.. it's all dependent on what you want to do.. does one want to just plink paper, self defense, even deer hunt.. Compared to the 9mm, .40S&W and the .45acp... that higher velocity and bullet weight pays off down range, it's a pretty flat shooting round.. you can hit a deer at 50yrds like a .357mag.  It's very common for hunters, not just to hunt with, but it's very popular in bear protection, the power of a decent sized wheel gun but with twice the capacity. The Denmark military use a G20 for polar bear protection.

The 357Sig I mentioned.. it's a souped up 9mm.. flat shooting as well..lot's of LEO's carry it. But while it has the velocity, the bullet doesn't carry the extra weight.

One round I would be willing to try in .45 is .45 Super... that is a moderized version of the .45acp.. but, there again.. you have to have a pistol that can handle the round.

Email from Glock, that was quick thumb1  The born on date is 2/1991, Production started on the G20 in very early 1991, and shipments started.. so it is still plausible it is one of the first to hit retailers and then a consumers hands. The G21 45acp started mid year of '91, and just prior in 1990, the G22 and G23 production started. The on-line data I found was off by a year.

Great info on all of the pistol calibers and their uses.  thumb1

So, first block of production in 1991, 26 years old already. I still think of Glocks as new-fangled plastic pistols  rofl

Heck yeah, we'll be able to get GMs G20 on a C&R in 2041.  thumb1

They are new-fangled if you compare it to a 1911 or Beretta  rofl  Figure the first was produced in 1983.. almost the same exact time the 10mm was developed.. Irony it seems.. the two combined a few years later and made a great handful of a pistol..

Every manufacture has since copied it... S&W was sued by Glock over the very early Sigma.... it's reported you could pull a slide off a Glock, stick it on the S&W frame and it would function..  I bought a Sigma just after that whole mess... the SD9VE series... people b*tch about a P64 trigger...OMG  :o  a Polish P64 is a target grade trigger..took some serious work to get it...somewhat decent.

I still have it.. I got good at throwing it.  thumb1

Another plus of the larger frame Glock.. one can always step down.. the joys of the modular pistol.. I can use a 40S&W, .357Sig, 9x25Dillion, all have the same sized case head, can use the same magazine, just change the barrel.

Gotta love big bore pistols, however I don't tolerate them as well as I used to. My father, God Bless his soul, collected several guns during his retirement. No theme or intent to his collection, he just bought what he liked or thought was a good buy. In his collection that we inherited, included a couple of 10mm pistols. A G20 and EAA Witness. Both fun, but the Glock, with the double stack width grip and that powerful round were a bit hard to handle. My age and arthritis are major factors...well arthur is major pain!  :(

My boys love shooting both and Talon grips made a world of difference for me on the G20.
