Wow, that looks to be in very good condition. Beautiful. Are the Polizei P.38s rarer than Wehrmacht issue?

By the Eagle F stamp.  There were were two inspectors at the Mauser plant that stamped either Eagle L and Eagle F.  The Eagle F are rare only 1,157 of them made in 1944.  No police P.38's have a letter suffix my pistol is 4869 if it was 4869a it could not be a police gun.  I hope this helps you understand.  The police holster has RB numbers on the back as in my example and a police eagle stamp below the P.38 stamp. The RB number points to a maufacturer of the holster. Some numbers have a known maker and some do not.  Mine is in the do not know category.

Good grief what a beautiful pistol. I know those police guns are stupidly rare.
I wonder if in the collector days of yore guys ever confused the e/L stamps for Luftwaffe marks?

Not lately though  the Luftwaffe did not carry P.38 pistols .  Not enough room in the cockpit . They carred smaller pistols LIKE THE Orteges .32 in Theuerman holster.

On their rarity the Eagle L were produced in 1943 and 1944 so they run a litte below an Eagle F.  The EagleF now days goes for more and is rarer some variances of the Model HP.
