Bolt Actions / Czech ZKM680

Another Czech, another caliber :) Also known as the Brno Fox, these started production in 1971, there is also a later model known as the Fox II, the only real difference between the two being the front sling hanger is moved from the barrel to the stock. This is the rifle that the Cz527 is based off of, and also the caliber, .222 Remington designed in 1950, is the father of many .22 centerfire cartridges.... the Army tested it and declined it, so Remington split the difference between the .222 and the .222 Remington magnum, in the end, this is the father cartridge to the .223/5.56, also the .221 Fireball, .22-250 and others., expanded, lengthened, shortened, most will trace back to the .222 Remington. The caliber was also was a benchrest record holder for many years, and still fairly common as a varmint round.. also its popular in Europe, its known as the 5.7x43 and not of military caliber. The Fox rifle models also kind of mark the ending of the Brno lineage, ZKMs, ZKKs, ZKBs, the Models 1 thru 5 rimfires,  and the gradual change over to the Cz factory for weaponry in the '64-'66 time frame.

Different sized actions, note the smaller .22 Hornet is labeled 22x35Ho, that was how Brno caliber stamped the first 2 years of production, it's dated '49, later it's marked 22Hornet.

Differences in the 22 Hornet, 222 Remington and 223 Remington.

Hi Fellow SKS Junkies,

Here's a quick and crappy shot of my humble Euro SKS iron heap. I just got the top rifle from MashedPotatoJohnson out of Huston. Took 2 months of Kali DOJ hassle. Top to bottom:
'51 Tula light refurb BBQ, where there's #s they match, only the stock is forced, doesn't seem run much, bolt and hammer face look new, over all excellent
'54 as issued Tula but ruined by the former 01 FFL who bought it new for $89 bucks back in the day, I call it the "Green Hornet"
'54 Izhevsk refurb all matching and not run much
'59 M59C Yugoslavian as issued with correct sling, about the cleanest SKS I have
'60 M56 Romanian, (Transylvania actually) forced in many areas, rough furniture, typical example for a Romy, good bore but looks like a vet
'69 & '70 M56 Albanian both matching, '70 is nicer
These guys are all cosmo free, clean and functional main battle rifles but are hanger queens. Someday I'll do a better pictorial layout, thanks for looking, enjoy. PAX

Milsurp Hand Guns & Sub Guns / Re: Sig Sauer M17

I think the likelihood that it's a marketing effort is a reasonable, and probable, explanation for these pistols, and I bought the gun with that in mind. From a collector/purist point of view, there are no visual distractions from a pistol that would end up in a GI's holster. It's the same reason I bought one of Beretta's M9 pistols a LONG time ago (the one in the green box with the Bianchi holster, GI belt, etc. - there was, if I recall, a minimal difference in the serial numbers, but it was as close as one could get to the genuine issue M9). As far as I know, the only REAL USGI M17s that have been sold on the civilian market were from about 4 or 5 years ago. Those seem to have been low-numbered guns with FDE controls that MAY have been a trial issue batch, many of which were sold with documentation indicating the unit to which the pistol was issued. Ballpark on those seems to be around $2500 now. I wonder if the FDE controls were the problem: if there was peeling of a coating on those items, that may have led to the change in spec to the black finish on the current-issue pistols.

Comparing the GI production-line M17 and the civilian M18 may indicate different production standards; the slide finish is different, the rear sight/optic plate fixing is altogether different, the slide release is different, etc. I'll say though that the civilian finish on the M18 slide and barrel seems to be slightly BETTER than on the M17, with a lot more bright spots on the M17's barrel.

That being said, it's been the gateway to a revelation for personal defense/concealed carry. I ran a few hundred rounds through the M17, M18, the P320XC, the Beretta M9, a duffle-bag 1986 CZ75, my Glock 19, and a Ruger .380 LCP this past weekend so I could continue to evaluate the best option for carry, and I find still that I can shoot the Sig pistols better than all the rest. A caveat there is that I've put small grip modules on the Sigs, all of which end up easier to control than the Gen4 Glock 19 without a backstrap.

Where did you buy this M17 if you don't mind me asking?

The black finish on the safety switch of real USGI M-17 gets worn off easily too.

Nice rifle, johnskiold56! I vote for leaving it as-is. And this brings to mind a question (that I may have asked here, but don't remember): has anyone seen a phenolic stock with believable serial numbers that match the rifle? I haven't personally, but with the SKSguy45's recently-imported "jungle carbine", it make me wonder if we might see some in the future...
