caution on shooting WW2 German steel case ammunition
« on: February 05, 2018, 04:53:29 PM »
As a collector of ammunition and especially WW2 German loadings by lot date and bullet type . I would like to pass on some dangers in shooting this ammunition . This is only steel case lacquered types not the brass or copper wash steel cased. At different times during the war ammunition manufacturers dropped the inside of the case coating. What has happened over the years is between primer and powder aging has caused the cases to rust through from inside out. Some will show rust spots and some will finally pop through and rust and powder kernels will leak out. It is advisable to pull down the ammunition and use the bullets for reloading or sell it off to collectors or use for display.  I caution people to not shoot it I know of one incident where a K43 bolt carrier was cracked from a bad round.
