Henry in .45-70
« on: September 15, 2014, 03:00:09 PM »
Ok, lets start right off with a big bore :o

I picked this up a while back, I traded off a .357 lever Marlin that just never was right after 2 return trips to their service facility. Since Henry released this beast, I've always wanted it. It's my second Henry, and if it's anything quality wise as the first, it should be a cherry. I'm impressed with the action smoothness considering what I gave up, it cycles smooth as butter. Granted it doesn't have a side feed loading gate like other manufactures, the tube design is smooth and operated very freely. It also has the XS rear peep sight and is pre-drilled for a scope, should I decide to install one.  While I'm not a very big fan of commercial weapons, this is one of the ultimate classic military calibers. I mean who's going to argue, the 'ol .45-70 Govt.  has been fully field tested and has been around since 1873.

Now that is an awesome rifle! Have you fired it yet? I love Henry rifles, recently gave my youngest daughter a Henry H001 .22 that I have had for about 12 years, she learned to shoot with it. They are smooth and seriously accurate guns.

The .45-70 is a real butt-kicker, you should have a lot of fun with this one!

I have yet to fire it, it however is on my list of "to dos".

The one thing I love about a .45-70, it's a very versatile round, from the lower power cowboy loads, to the regular run of the mill trapdoor loadings, to the rip your arm off and kill a rabid rhino at your front door Garrett and Buffalo Bore max P+ loads.  I have even used blackpowder loadings, over all, the caliber is one of my favorites.

A cousin had a reproduction .45-70 Springfield Trapdoor carbine, it was a hoot to shoot I'll tell ya! I had no idea there is so many variations available in the .45-70.

You pay a premium for those Henry Rifles, but they sure are darn nice.  I've had my eye on a Big Boy in .357 mag for some time now, but never could justify dropping the $700+ for one.

Heck, I don't know who I'm fooling though, I wouldn't know what to do with a brass receivered gun like that.  It would stay unfired for fear of messing something up.  :-[

Shoot it is what you do with it. If you stay on top of it, the brass is not an issue, just like gold bluing. I've had the BigBoy 44 Mag for 5 or 6 years. Shot who knows how many through it and it still pretty as the day I took the photo of it.

I was advised no polishing/abrasives, as I was explained, they have a clear protective coating. I've only kept it well oiled and a silicone wrap on it. I've never actually polished the brass.  It may take an extra 15 minutes, but no outrageous polish this, buff that.

Wish the same could be said about my black powder pistols, that brass is a pain to keep clean, and even worse after shooting them. But, silicone socks help with them as well when stored, that and Bore Butter thumb1

Well that's good, I was wondering if maybe they had some sort of protective finish.

Black powder arms are a pain in the arse but fun to shoot, I was into that several years ago. In fact I still have a nipple wrench that fits the SKS front sight post perfectly!
