A walk down magazine lane...
« on: December 13, 2016, 09:41:40 AM »
Was going through some photos and found a bunch from a once large magazine collection I used to have (all were 7.62). Had a lot invested and really enjoyed them, but like most things in life I had my fill and moved on.

These are just a few gems from the 150 or so different magazines that I had from everywhere. Enjoy the mag porn!

The only ones I regret selling are the Chinese type 63's:

Bulgarian experimentals:

Russian plum waffle:

Bosnian single ribs, one with and one without the Fleur de Lis:

North Korean. 20 round folded spine, 30 round folded spine, and 30 round star-in-circle spine stamp:

Paki plastic. Unmarked painted, unmarked unpainted, faux Izzy, faux Molot, and faux Bulgy RPK ((23)) marked:

And the drums, Chinese that is. Pictured here are 10 different examples. By the time I was done I had 13 different, 10 75's and 3 100's.

That's awesome Greg! thumb1  I've always dug those Fleur de lis mags.  Any indication those were modded in anyway to fit into the modified select fire M59/66 SKS the Bosnians seem to have used?

The two that I had were not modified in that way, though I have seen one of the modified mags you speak of. At first I thought it was a one-off or Bubba job, but have since heard of others that exist so I guess that was a thing.

Jumpin' Jehosaphat!  Nice collection!  8) I like the fleur-de-lis mags too, but the Russian plum waffle mag...  drool2

Cashing out that collection would have brought in more than a few pennies  :o

There is about 6 grand worth of magazines in those 7 pictures. I think the total investment into my magazine collection topped out at about $10,000. Then I started getting into rare kits (AK) and military clones (also AK) which are expensive, so I sold off the mags and went down that road for a few years. Got that out of my system and now am loving the glamorous (and substantially cheaper!) world of the SKS :)

Awesome collection of mags, Greg! The Type 63 and, the Chinese RPK/AK drums, were my definite favorites.

I have a smaller collection of the Type 63 mags. Two of the black plastic, one each of the top two mags, on the right hand side of the top row. I'm still looking for one of the "star" mags. I didn't realize that there were three versions of them.

I only have two of the Chinese 100rd., two of the Chinese 75rd., and 4 of the Romy 75rd drums. I'd like to pick up a couple of those 75rd. Russian Molot drums that I saw advertised over ak-files.com.

Were there Polytech produced drums? In both 75rd and 100rd capacities?

I was able to pick up a Chinese 75rd SKS (duckbill) drum. It's still new in plastic, so I haven't tried it for function yet. I've heard some work and others were finicky.

Thanks for sharing Greg!

Polytech did import their brand of drums but only in 75 round capacity. Like most things Polytech, they are a degree or two above a comparable Norinco item in terms of fit and finish. The winding key is referred to as a "mickey mouse" style and it has a spring that holds the key to the body of the drum to prevent flopping around:

There was also a similar version imported but without the Polytech name stamped on it, but is clearly the same:

They fetch a Polytech style premium price too, expect to spend $200+ when found.
